A community of hurricane-resistant homes is being built in Gulfport, Mississippi.
The modular concrete homes will be built by Royal Concrete Concepts in Okeechobee, Fla., and sold through the company’s Mississippi distributor, Concrete Building Concepts, according to the Sun Herald.
The 248 modular homes will make up a new subdivision called Turtle Creek.
Funding for the project was provided by a Hurricane Katrina Community Development Block Grant administered by Gov. Haley Barbour, the Mississippi Development Authority and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The houses will range in price from $140,000 to $170,000 and have a southwestern adobe, French Quarter look. MDA spokesman Lee Youngblood says the homes were designed to fit in with existing homes in the surrounding neighborhood.
