Amount in local community charitable grants the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation awarded to nonprofit agencies in California. The association also made 2008 Special Grants totaling more than $70,000, according to Tom Jones an executive with Liberty Mutual and chairman of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, Western Division.

Amount being spent to upgrade Hawaii’s disaster warning system. The money will be used to upgrade existing Civil Defense sirens and to install new solar-powered sirens, with a focus on tsunami inundation zones.
Gov. Linda Lingle said that the state needs a comprehensive and up-to-date system to support state Civil Defense in responding to disasters and in keeping residents and visitors safe. Earlier this year, Civil Defense identified 249 sirens that needed to be installed or replaced. (AP)
