Maine officials are encouraging residents to protect their homes against severe summer weather.
Maine Gov. Paul LePage and Bureau of Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa say that the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season means that residents should be ready for possible high winds, flooding and other things that can damage homes. Hurricane season runs June 1 through Nov. 30.
Officials say Mainers should examine their homeowner or renter insurance policies to make sure their coverage is sufficient and consider whether they also need to purchase flood insurance.
They’re also urging Mainers to inventory of their property and assemble an emergency supply kit that includes several days’ of drinking water, non-perishable goods, first aid materials, batteries and insurance company contact information, among other things.
