Vermont dairy farmers face a Friday deadline to enroll in a new price protection program.
The Margin Protection Program is a voluntary insurance program that enables dairy farmers to protect themselves from low prices.
The program protects farmers when the difference between milk prices and feed costs fall below an amount selected by the farmer. Minimum coverage costs $100.
The Burlington Free Press reports about two-thirds of dairy farmers in the state have yet to apply. Congressman Peter Welch and Vermont Agriculture, Food and Markets Secretary Chuck Ross Jr. addressed a news conference Monday stressing that they apply.
Farmers can sign up through the nine Farm Service Agency offices across the state: Williston, Middlebury, St. Albans, Morrisville, St. Johnsbury, Newport, Rutland, White River Junction and Brattleboro.
