The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) issued a data call for property/casualty insurers, the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF), the Joint Insurance Association (JIA), and surplus lines brokers in the state to provide data regarding claims relating to the recent Baltimore riots.
On May 5, MIA issued Bulletin 15-10 (Re: COMAR 31.01.02 Emergency Regulation on Claims Information for the Baltimore City Civil Unrest) directing the state’s authorized P/C insurers, MAIF, and JIA to provide the data set forth in COMAR 31.01.02.07(3). The bulletin said the data should be submitted for each individual insurance company, by lines of business, for the City of Baltimore using the online Severe Event Data Collector.
Additionally, on May 6, MIA issued Bulletin 15-12 (Re: Maryland Insurance Code 搂搂2-206(1) and 3-322 Emergency Regulation on Claims Information for the Baltimore City Civil Unrest) to surplus lines brokers. The bulletin directed the state’s surplus lines brokers to provide the data regarding claims relating to Baltimore’s civil unrest pursuant to Maryland Insurance Code 搂搂2-206(1) and 3-322. The surplus lines brokers were directed to submit their data for each surplus lines company they represent, by lines of business, for the City of Baltimore using the online Severe Event Data Collector.
Submission deadlines are as follows: data as of May 27, 2015 due June 10, 2015; data as of June 27, 2015 due July 10, 2015; and data as of July 27, 2015 due August 10, 2015.
“Together, they should allow the Maryland Insurance Administration to gather a complete picture of the claims filed as a result of the civil unrest, whether policies in the affected areas were standard or sold through a surplus lines carrier,” MIA spokesperson Vivian D. Laxton said.
She added that claims-related complaints are just beginning to reach MIA. “It is too early to identify any trends, although the agency will be tracking complaints specific to this event,” she said.
