A former insurance salesman who stole almost $1 million from an elderly friend’s accounts has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
Kevin Collins will also have to pay $926,455 in restitution under the sentence imposed. The 58-year-old Union man had pleaded guilty to theft by unlawful taking. He admitted making withdrawals from the victims’ life insurance policies and annuities between 2009 and 2015 without the victim’s knowledge.
The judge initially rejected the plea agreement reached in the case, saying he wouldn’t accept the deal unless the victim’s heirs were included so they would receive any remaining restitution payments if the man died. Both sides agreed to the condition.
Collins’ paid $50,000 in restitution before the hearing.
