Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has set a record for construction projects thanks to some large city-backed flood-recovery work and building by private businesses.
The Gazette reports there were $346.65 million in construction starts in the fiscal year that ended June 30.
That included projects such as the new convention center, library and central fire station as well as renovations to the Paramount Theatre and City Hall.
Mayor Ron Corbett says there also has been plenty of private-sector spending, including new buildings by supply chain management company Intermec and agribusiness company Cargill.
The new figure is far ahead of the city’s average over the past 11 years of $219 million in construction starts.
