Iowa lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow employees to carry firearms or ammunition onto employer’s property if the guns or ammunition are out of sight and locked in a vehicle.
An employer, owner or possessor of the property on which the employer is located would be immune from any claim or lawsuit brought by any person seeking damages that are alleged, directly or indirectly, as a result of any firearms brought onto the property.
would also prohibit insurers from denying property casualty coverage coverage to a school based solely on the presence of a person lawfully carrying a firearm on school grounds.
A person with a valid permit to carry would be permitted to bring a gun onto a school parking lot if they are in the act of dropping or picking up a student, staff member, or other person having business at the school. A retired peace officer would be allowed to carry firearms on school grounds.
Drivers of school vehicles would need authorization to carry firearms or ammunitions in the vehicle’s passenger compartment.
At universities and community colleges, a registered gun owner would be able to bring a firearm to campus as long as it is hidden.
The bill received preliminary subcommittee approval this week.
