The state’s insurance commissioner says members of the military stationed in Arkansas should consider buying renter’s insurance because the Basic Allowance for Housing no longer covers it.
Insurance Commissioner Allen Kerr said that last year, Congress reduced rates for the housing allowance, which also eliminated the renter’s insurance portion.
Kerr says service members in Arkansas renewing their leases this year to purchase the insurance should make sure their valuables are protected.
He says the average renter’s insurance policy costs between $15 and $30 per month. Renter’s policies can cover anything from electronics to home appliances and clothing.
