Austell, Georgia Mayor Joe Jerkins says the demolition of 19 flood-damaged homes purchased by the city could begin later this month.
The Cobb County city is accepting bid proposals for asbestos removal and demolition for the homes it purchased under a $2.9 million federal buyout program. Asbestos abatement contractors and structure demolition contractors are being asked to submit completed proposal packages by July 22.
The buyouts, which include demolition, are funded in part by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state, which pay 75 percent and 10 percent, respectively. The city pays 15 percent.
The homes are scattered about the city.
Cobb County has already begun to demolish the 50 houses severely damaged by the September 2009 floods that it acquired through its $5.9 million buyout program.
