The Kentucky Supreme Court heard arguments Thursday from a group of Amish men who have refused to use a reflective traffic sign on their horse-drawn buggies because it goes against their religion.
The Amish men say their faith forbids them from using the orange reflective triangles, and many have gone to jail in Graves County for refusing to pay fines for breaking the law.
An attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union argued on behalf of the Amish men, who are part of a conservative sect known as Swartzentruber. They say the signs are gaudy and they don’t depend on manmade symbols for safety.
Kentucky lawmakers are also considering a bill that would allow the Amish men to use gray reflective tape instead of the triangles.
