A lobbyist for the National Rifle Association said the gun lobby expects to support legislation in Alabama next year allowing people to carry a loaded handgun in their car without a permit.
NRA lobbyist Michael Sullivan told Al.com that he expects such legislation when the Legislature returns next year.
A similar proposal from state Sen. Scott Beason failed this year. Beason ran unsuccessfully for Congress, so he will not be returning to his Statehouse seat. The Alabama Sheriffs Association opposed the proposal.
Sullivan said he expects other state lawmakers to continue the effort.
He said none of the states bordering Alabama require a permit to carry a pistol in a motor vehicle.
