School officials in Limestone County, Alabama say that in November they will move to suspend the driver licenses of students who are chronically absent without a valid reason.
The Code of Alabama allows for the denying of licenses for those under 19 who aren’t in school.
The News Courier reports that the statute gives school systems the right to appeal to a local court to have truant teens’ licenses suspended. Students must then meet certain requirements of attendance to have their license reinstated.
Superintendent Tom Sisk tells The Decatur Daily that while the law has been available for several years, it has been within each school system’s discretion whether to implement the attendance policy.
