Authorities say a 100-year-old man has been killed after the car he was driving on a private road at a gated South Carolina island resort ran into a tree.
S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Hannah Wimberly said the wreck happened around 2 p.m. Nov. 11 inside Hilton Head Plantation on Hilton Head Island.
Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen says Gene Mayfield did not appear to have any medical problems before the crash and died from blunt force trauma from the wreck. The coroner says Mayfield lived in Hilton Head Plantation.
Wimberly says Mayfield’s driver’s license had been suspended, but she did not know why. Mayfield was not wearing a seatbelt and the wreck is still under investigation.
