Along with hurricanes and litigation, Floridians and their insurers can now add another potential concern: earthquakes.
The National Weather Service reported that a 4.0 magnitude temblor, one of the largest recorded in the state, was felt off Florida’s east coast this week, about 100 from Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, according to the Associated Press and local news .
About 80 residents on the coast reported feeling the shaking Wednesday night, Florida Today . No property damage was reported.
Earthquakes are rare in Florida, but minor ones have happened. In 1879, a 4.4 magnitude shake was recorded in or near Putnam County. A 2006 quake in the Gulf of Mexico rattled homes and swimming pools around the state, the Tampa Bay Times said. In 2020, northwest Florida felt a 3.8-level one.
