Two Carolina businessmen were charged with auto insurance fraud in separate schemes that involved made-up tow truck charges and windshields that were never replaced.
In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, state authorities last week charged John Angulo, 46, the owner of Safe Pro Auto Glass, with submitting 13 claims to Allstate Insurance for auto glass that was never replaced, local news sites reported.
The allegedly false claims amounted to more than $38,000 and were submitted in 2024 and 2025, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said, according to WMBF . Angulo was booked into jail in Horry County. The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Department of Insurance, the news site reported.
In North Carolina, the manager of a towing firm was charged with fraud after he reportedly submitted a bill for $4,250 to Peak Property and Casualty Insurance, the North Carolina Department of Insurance reported.
The large price tag included some suspicious charges, including a $500 “clean up” fee and a $750 fee for “special equipment.” Surveillance video and witnesses indicated that no special equipment was used and no clean up was done in the tow job, NCDOI said. When authorities questioned Antonio Lorenzo Covington, 32, he could not explain the extra charges, the Charlotte Observer .
Covington is the manager of Tow Godz towing service in Charlotte. He was booked into jail July 21.
