Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna and five interpreters are planning to help educate Seattle’s Asian communities about fraud prevention.
McKenna’s office, the Asian Pacific American Resource Network (APARN), and the Asian Counseling & Referral Service (ACRS) have organized a Theft and Medical Fraud Prevention Event, being held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at the Asian Counseling & Referral Service office.
“Immigrants are a growing, vital part of our local economy,” McKenna said. “Unfortunately scam artists have noticed the success of new Americans and have targeted them for a variety of crimes. That’s why we’ve worked with our partners at APARN to offer multilingual information about how to guard against some of the most common frauds.”
Representatives from the AG’s office, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Health, the Federal Trade Commission, as well as other government and non-government agencies will be on hand to answer consumer questions.
McKenna plans to discuss what the state is doing to fight frauds targeting senior and immigrant populations, and his speech will be translated into Cantonese, Mandarin, Hindi, Korean and Vietnamese.
