The American Falls, Idaho, City Council is cracking down on the owners of dogs that attack humans or other animals inside city limits.
The council approved a new ordinance that gives police authority to issue a misdemeanor to offending dog owners.
City leaders say they are confident they can enforce the law.
Under the new ordinance, owners cited for a dog attack would be required to keep the canine confined inside or in a locked kennel, display warning signs and provide proof of public liability insurance.
It also gives authorities power to euthanize dogs in severe cases.
The ordinance is in response to an increased number of attacks by pit bulls. Last year, police reported at least 10 cases of pit bulls killing other animals and one case of a police officer injured in an attack.
