The Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill has amassed over over 8 million participants, according to its organizers.
The event, set for Oct. 20 at 10:20 a.m., has surpassed the 2010 record of 7.9 million registrants, organizers said.
“This is now officially the largest earthquake preparedness drill ever,” California Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Kate Long said in a statement.
Long said she expects registration to reach 8.4 million participants.
On the day of the drill participants are asked to “drop, cover and hold on,” which the organizers say is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes
The Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill is an nnual event produced by the Earthquake Country Alliance, the Southern California Earthquake Center, Cal EMA, FEMA, U.S. Geological Survey, American Red Cross, State Farm Insurance and the California Earthquake Authority.
