Authorities are blaming the weekend storms for a giant sinkhole that’s gaped open on a Southern California street.
The sinkhole, estimated at around 15 feet wide and 20 feet deep, opened Monday afternoon in Redlands in San Bernardino County. It’s diverted traffic on Redlands Boulevard.
The sinkhole is next to a flood control channel running below an intersection. A city statement says it appears to be storm-related.
Workers at the scene tell the Riverside Press-Enterprise that heavy rains apparently eroded the flood channel below the road.
There’s no word on when it will be repaired.
Redlands is about 70 miles east of Los Angeles.
