Drivers who don’t wear seatbelts could be stopped by police under a proposal that has cleared the Utah House of Representatives.
Republican Rep. Lee Perry of Perry says the bill that passed the House Tuesday will strengthen the seatbelt law and help prevent traffic deaths.
Under current Utah law, police can only ticket drivers older than 19 for seatbelt violations after they’ve been pulled over for another traffic offense.
Some lawmakers who voted against the measure said it could infringe on personal liberties.
The Deseret News reported the proposal would allow drivers one warning before they’re ticketed.
The bill now goes to the Utah Senate for consideration.
