The huge fire burning in the San Bernardino National Forest east of Los Angeles has grown by another thousand acres and has now scorched more than 17 square miles of mountains.
The U.S. Forest Service says the blaze sending up a massive plume from timber-covered ridges is 10 percent contained Friday morning.
Firefighters hope to use helicopters to battle the flames but conditions are too turbulent to use air tankers.
Several hundred people were evacuated from camps after the fire broke out Wednesday, but no injuries have been reported.
