The National Weather Service has issued more than double the number of tornado warnings in Wyoming so far this year than are typically issued.
The Casper Star-Tribune reported the service has issued 51 warnings in Wyoming this year. The state has received 19 warnings on average per year between 2006 and 2017.
National Weather Service meteorologist Noah Myers says the state’s peak tornado season runs from April through July, so the number is unlikely to climb by much.
Three tornadoes swept across Laramie County during a single weekend in May.
A twister touched down for eight minutes near Gillette in early June, and a second tornado struck north of Laramie later that month.
Another tornado touched down south of Douglas on Saturday.
