North Carolina authorities have charged a Charlotte-area insurance agent with identity theft after he reportedly took out a life insurance policy without the man’s knowledge.
Derek Urban Ezzell, 56, a multi-lines producer in Concord, submitted an insurance application in the name of a person, under false pretenses, and without telling the insured, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey’s office said in a bulletin. The application was submitted in April and Ezzell was charged Sept. 6. He is due in court Oct. 18.
Ezzell, of Derek Ezzell Insurance Services, has been a licensed agent since 1995, for accident, life health, property and casualty lines, the Department of Insurance license page shows. In 2023 he was appointed with N.C. Grange Mutual Insurance Co., a property insurer, and with Progressive Southeastern Insurance.
